Budget & Categories

Set monthly budgets and customise spending categories

Overview

Budget and category management gives you control over how your spending is organised and measured. Set a monthly budget to track progress with a visual burndown chart, and customise categories so every purchase is labelled in a way that makes sense to you.

Setting Your Monthly Budget

A monthly budget tells Yomio how much you plan to spend in a given month. Once set, the Statistics tab shows a burndown chart tracking your progress.

1

Open Profile

Tap the Profile icon in the bottom navigation bar
2

Tap Budget Settings

Find the Budget Settings row in your Profile screen and tap it
3

Enter your budget amount

Type the maximum amount you want to spend this month. The budget uses your profile currency.
4

Save

Tap Save. Your budget takes effect immediately and the burndown chart appears in Statistics.

💡Monthly Reset

Your budget resets automatically on the first day of each month. You only need to update the amount if you want to change it — it carries forward unchanged each month.

Reading the Burndown Chart

The Burndown Chart in the Statistics tab gives you a live view of how your spending compares to your budget for the current month.

  • Green zone: your spending is comfortably within budget
  • Yellow zone: you have spent more than 75% of your budget — time to be cautious
  • Red zone: you have exceeded your budget
  • Projected spend line: based on your current pace, Yomio estimates where you'll end the month
  • Daily allowance: the amount you can spend per remaining day and still stay on budget
  • Percentage label: the proportion of your budget already consumed

Burndown vs Spending Trend

The Burndown Chart tracks budget vs actual for the current month only. For historical comparisons across months, use the Spending Trend card in the Statistics tab.

📝Premium Feature

The burndown chart, projected overspend line, and budget alerts are available on the Premium plan. Free users see their total spend for the month but without budget tracking.

Budget Alerts

Yomio can send you a push notification when you are approaching or have exceeded your monthly budget.

75% Alert

Notified when you have used 75% of your monthly budget — a heads-up to moderate spending for the rest of the month.

100% Alert

Notified when you reach or exceed your budget — so you always know the moment you go over.

1

Enable push notifications

Go to Profile → Notifications and make sure push notifications are turned on
2

Set your budget

Alerts only fire if a budget amount is set in Budget Settings
3

Spend normally

Yomio checks your cumulative spend each time you add a purchase and triggers alerts automatically

Default Categories

Yomio includes over 40 built-in categories that cover everyday spending — from detailed grocery sub-categories (Bakery, Dairy, Meat & Poultry, Fish & Seafood, Fruits & Vegetables, Beverages) to lifestyle categories (Entertainment, Transportation, Healthcare, Education). Each purchase item is automatically assigned a category based on the product name extracted from your receipt.

Other
  • Categories appear in your analytics, purchase list, and export files
  • Toggle a built-in category on or off in Profile → Categories — hidden categories are excluded from the category selector but their existing purchases are preserved
  • You can manually override the automatic categorisation on any purchase
  • The "Other" category catches any purchase that cannot be matched to a specific category

💡Auto-Categorisation

Yomio uses keyword matching (in 10 languages) and a machine-learning model to categorise your purchases automatically. The more receipts you scan, the more consistent the categorisation becomes.

Custom Categories

If the built-in categories do not fit your lifestyle, create your own. Custom categories work exactly like built-in ones — they appear in analytics, filters, and the category selector.

1

Open Profile

Tap the Profile icon in the bottom navigation bar
2

Tap Categories

Find the Categories setting in your Profile screen
3

Tap the + button

The Add Category form opens
4

Enter a name

Type a category name (e.g. "Hobby Supplies", "Baby", "Side Business")
5

Add a description

Optionally add a short description to help you remember what this category is for
6

Pick a color

Choose from 12 preset color swatches to distinguish this category in charts and lists
7

Save

Tap Save. Your new category is immediately available in the category selector when adding or editing purchases.

Managing Custom Categories

  • Edit a custom category: tap its name to update the name or color
  • Delete a custom category: swipe left and tap Delete. Purchases already assigned to this category move to "Other".
  • Built-in categories cannot be deleted — only hidden

Limit Your Categories

Keeping fewer, broader categories makes your analytics more readable. If you create too many specific categories, pie charts and breakdowns become hard to interpret.

Tips for Effective Categorisation

  • Review uncategorised (Other) purchases weekly and reassign them for accurate analytics
  • Create custom categories for recurring expense types unique to your lifestyle — e.g. "Home Office" or "Pet Food"
  • If you run a side business, create a custom category to separate business expenses from personal spending
  • Use category filters in the Statistics tab to drill into a specific area of spending
  • When adding purchases manually, always set the category — auto-categorisation only runs on scanned receipts
